About the Gull Lake Chain of Lakes

Comprised of 8 lakes, two bays, and a network of connecting channels and waterways, the Gull Chain of lakes is one of central Minnesota's premier outdoor and recreation destinations.

The Gull Chain covers over 13,000 acres within Cass and Crow Wing Counties, forming part of the Crow Wing River Watershed which eventually feeds into the mighty Mississippi River.

Gull Lake itself is located less than 20 minutes from Brainerd, and 2 hours from Minneapolis to the south. Raised 5 feet by the construction of Gull Lake Dam in 1912, Gull Lake is now 80 feet at its deepest point. Overall, the lake is roughly 8 miles long and 3 miles across at its widest, covering an area of more than 9,000 acres. The lake's southernmost points are enclosed by Wilson's and Steamboat Bay.

Gull Lake Chain Community Information

The shores of the Gull Lakes are shared by three communities: Nisswa, Lake Shore, and East Gull Lake.

Nisswa - Northeast of Gull Lake, running along Highway 371, the town of Nisswa is a popular destination for families due to its many festivals, and events held throughout the year. The highlight for many are the weekly turtle races held during the summer. Nisswa is also known for its amazing retail options, so stop by to pick up some gourmet coffee, chocolate, or craft beers.

Lake Shore - This small town sits at the north-western end of Gull Lake, and encompasses both Lake Margaret and Upper Gill Lake. The commercial area of the town extends across the waterways connecting these three lakes. To the west, the town includes wood and farmland.

East Gull Lake - at Gull Lake's south-eastern end, East Gull Lake is home to a number of beautiful resorts and golf courses. In addition to Gull Lake, Kavanaugh's, Madden's, and Cragun's Resorts, the town also has a small airport for easy access. 

As with the Brainerd Lakes Area in general, the lakes of the Gull Chain are excellent destinations for range of recreational activities like skiing, skating, snowmobiling, fishing, hiking, and boating. However, the size and extent of this system of lakes make it a highlight for outdoor enthusiasts in the region.

For example, Gull Lake is host to the annual Ice Fishing Extravaganza which sees more than ten thousand ice fishermen compete across more than 20,000 holes drilled into the ice. All proceeds collected by the Host, the Brainerd Jaycees go to local charities and organizations.
